Conversations with Madelyn

Posted by Karla on July 27, 2006

Life is never dull in the company of my daughter.  In the past few days alone we’ve had some moments that have had us in tears laughing so hard. I thought I’d share them with you.

First, she’s started this temper tantrum thing and when it begins we put her in her room until she’s done.  The other night she screamed and cried in her room for about 5 minutes.  She came down the stairs and said “I’m done now.”  LOL

She and Joel were walking around the back yard.  She looked up at a tree and said “Well that’s a tree if I ever saw one.”

Last night we were outside and I wanted to go in. She didn’t want to stay outside by herself because she said she’d be “scared”.  I asked her what she’d be scared of.

MADDIE: Bugs.

ME: Why are you scared of bugs?

MADDIE: They might sting me.

ME: Why would they sting you.

MADDIE: Because I taste them.

ME: Why do you taste them?

MADDIE: Well, I don’t eat them…I just taste them a little. Then they sting me.

I tried so hard to recreate the conversation and record it, but she wouldn’t say it again. She just kept saying “just because.”

My mom is baby sitting two extra kids this week, Matthew and Morgan. I asked Maddie how that was going. She said “Morgan and I play all day long. We fight a lot too.” I asked her why she and Morgan were fighting a lot. She said “Cause that’s what girls do.” Well, I can’t argue that.

Good times

Posted by Karla on July 26, 2006

Theres nothing like just sitting down to eat lunch, getting ready to watch All My Children and the grand opening of ConFusion and getting a phone call that your sister has fallen down the stairs at McDonalds and broken her ankle.  Me being the only “doctor” in the family, I at he first one to be called.  No lunch. No AMC. Sniff.  Thats alright though. I took care of my sister.  She has a hairline fracture on one side and sprained her ankle.  She’s now limping merrily along on crutches for awhile.

BIG BROTHER

Big Brother was awesome last night.   I shed a little tear for Kayser’s beautiful locks.  Why oh Why??????? I was happy for George though.  I think that veto competition was made just for him though.  It was too easy.  I think James gunning for George so badly is just plain stupid. If he wants to kick a “floater” out so badly, send Diane packing.  If for some reason Jase ends up staying, James is toast. At least it takes the heat of my Kayser though.

LAST COMIC STANDING

I’m not the hugest fan of Roz, but she is funny. I thought Michelle Balan should have been the one to go home, but whatever.  I think hope she’ll be gone next week though. Chris Porter took it down last night though.  Every week he is funnier and funnier. I do like Josh Blue, but his jokes are kind of becoming the same. Ty was funny last night too and thats not normal for him. I dont care for him much.  They brought Gary Gulman from a previous season. I used to like him, but he’s not nearly as funny as he used to be. He’s touring with Dane Cook though, so I am going to assume that Dane Cook took all his humor away for himself.

ROCK STAR SUPERNOVA

I love Dilana more every week. She is so awesome.

I can’t stand Lukas Rossi. I don’t like his voice, his attitude, his clothes, his hair, his makeup, nothing.  I don’t know why supernova likes him so much.

I don’t like Zayra either. I don’t know how she made it on, her voice sucks. Her stage presence is completely gone.

I do like Ryan Star. Supernova doesn’t though.

Phil Ritchie almost brought me to tears with his painful rendition of One Headlight.  I wanted to stab something into my ears.

On the other hand, I liked Storm, Jill, Dana and Toby last night. I thought they did great.

Crazy Lady

Posted by Karla on July 25, 2006

Sometimes you have nothing to say. Sometimes you have a lot to say. Sometimes you have a lot to say and can’t get it out in a way that makes sense.  Today I have a lot of little things to say. I don’t have any one thing to make a full post a bout.

ME SO FUNNY

The other day Joel and I watched my Coldplay Live DVD for the 200,000th time.  He is well aware of my obsession with Chris Martin and is totally cool with it.  Just joking like he said “I bet you wish I was Chris Martin, don’t you?” I said “No, because sometimes you are.” (If you don’t get it you need to think about it for a minute and you will.)

Joel was bragging to someone about how much fun he had on his fishing trip and how his meals were all prepared for him, his bed was made when he got back, etc. I said “You mean just like home.”

MADDIE

She has been waking up hungry in the middle of the night. I’m pretty convinced that she’s not actually hungry since she eats plenty before bed.   I think she’s just saying it tp be saying it.  I do feel bad about telling her “Too bad you’re hungry, you can’t eat.” Well I felt bad at first, but not anymore.

Even though she’s been fully potty trained for almost a year now, I still make her wear a diaper to bed just in case. There’s nothing worse than chaning wet sheets in the middle of the night.  Dylan still wears one to bed (totally totally kidding).  Anyway for the last two weeks or so she’s woke up with dry diapers every day.  I guess it’s almost time to do away with the final baby thing.

DYLAN

He had his 2nd day of swimming lessons today. He’s really loving it and mom said he did great. I’m so happy.

HEAT WAVE

Yesterday it was supposed to be about 87, which is a good 10 degrees cooler than the last 4 days.  It turned out to be around 95 or so.  By about 10:00 last night our house had cooled down so much though. Today they’re saying around 80. I can totally handle that.  Finally a night I won’t have to sleep with a cold wet towel.

WHEEL OF FORTUNE

I’m trying out for my favorite game show this weekend at Seven Cedars Casino.  I can’t wait. Wish me luck. My ever so optimistic son thinks I’m a genius and shouldn’t have any problem kicking butt and getting on TV. Man I wish I was as good as my son thinks I am.

NEXT WEEKEND

Next weekend Joel and I are going ot Eastern Washington for the weekend. My dad is watching the kids. My oldest friend is getting married and we’re going to celebrate it. I can’t wait.

MEETING MY NEW NEPHEW

In a few weeks Joel’s only sister is coming up from California to visit. She’s bringing her little boy whom we haven’t met yet.  We’re all very excited. Joel’s sister is one of my dearest friends and I absolutely adore her.

BLOG CHANGE

As you can see I changed the blog around a bit.  I have a bit of ADD or something. I get tired of looking at the same thing all the time.  I also love purple so I had to find something with purple. Unfortunately WordPress is pretty limited in their themes and templates, but I found something I liked.

BLOGLINES

I finally inserted a bloglines subscribe button on the right side if you want to subscribe to my feed.

Top 100 Movies #21-30

Posted by Karla on July 25, 2006

21. Sixteen Candles – Long Duc Dong totally stole the movie. Okay maybe the hottie Jake Ryan did.

22. Grease – Sorry Mom. Gotta put this one on here. Even my son loves this movie.

23. Revenge of the Sith – Hayden Christensen went from being the dorky lovesick Anakin (episode 2) to being the hottest bad guy ever. I think that George Lucas really pulled the whole saga together well in this last one.

24. Defending Your Life – Starring Albert Brooks and Meryl Streep. Its kind of about reincarnation, which I don’t believe in but the movie has a great plot and a great story to it.

25. Hitch – Doing the Q-Tip….toss it away.

26. Dude Where’s My Car – Teaming up Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott was the most genius move a casting director could make.

27. There’s Something About Mary – I think this may be the hardest I’ve ever laughed in a movie theater. Believe it or not I saw this movie two times in the same weekend.

28. Fear – Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon. I looove Mark Wahlberg and this is one of my favorite movies he’s done. (I’ve touched his leg too by the way, but that’s a different story all together)

29. Harold and Kumar go to White Castle – I could go on forever about this movie. Its kind of a dumb crude humor, but its awesome.

30. American Pie – I’m talking about the first one. The most classic of the three. The 2nd and 3rd are not bad by any means, but the first one is by far the best. I love it.

Our Hot and Wet Weekend

Posted by Karla on July 24, 2006

Hot being the weather. It was over 90 for three days in a row. When you don’t have AC, thats hotter than the pits of you know where. I don’t care who you are.

Saturday night we went to the Point No Point Beach in Hansville. It was so hot in our house we just had to find somewhere with a semi cool breeze. We had the same idea as 3/4 of Kitsap County. The beach was packed solid. Its one of the few sandy beaches in the area. We took the buckets and pails and the kids played for a really long time. The air was hot but not scorching. The breeze was cool but not cold. It was perfect. Maddie was knocked over by a wave, I thought she was going to flip out but she thought it was funny. Dylan found what he thought was going to be a water balloon. Turned out it was a condom. Yea, I know. Can you say antibacterial shower????? Gross.

Today we spent hours at the pool at my sisters house. Hours. Dylan, who starts swimming lessons tomorrow was a little hesitant about the pool. He had goggles and a nose plug (which by the way he used by sticking the plugs UP his nose rather than ON his nose). After about 45 minutes of coaxing, I got him away from the wall. After about an hour or so of instruction by me (by instruction I mean frustrating conversation and butting of heads), this is what the result was….

Video of Dylan

HE SWAM!!!!!!!!!!!!! By the end of the day he was doing even better than THIS.

I tried to talk him into jumping in. After all, the water was only 3-4 feet in that area, its not like he wasn’t going to be able to touch. He wouldn’t do it. Wouldn’t budge at all. So finally, the bad mom that I am, I picked his big butt up out of the pool carried him to the edge and threw him in. Thats right I threw my son in the pool. You know what he did when he came up??? He didn’t yell. He didn’t cry. He didn’t pout. He said “Hey, I can do that!” and you know what…. he could…

2nd Video of Dylan

The other boy is a boy named AJ who is the son of one of my sisters friends. He’s a year younger than Dylan and could swim like a fish. I think that spurred him on too.

As far as Maddie goes, I slapped on some water wings and gave her a water noodle and she was happy as a clam. She said she liked to float by herself the best. She’d kick her little legs and swim all over the pool. She did great. By the end of the day she was falling asleep floating in the pool. That was our sign to leave.

Here are some pictures of the kids swimming.

100 Favorite Movies #31-40

Posted by Karla on July 21, 2006

31. Happy Gilmore – Dylan loves this movie too. I shouldn’t let him watch it but its about golf, and well its funny.

32. Savannah Smiles – I’m trying to get Dylan to watch this movie but so far, no go. It was and still is one of my favorite movies ever.

33. So I Married an Axe Murderer – Heather and I always laughed when we watched the scene when the dad is talking about the kids big “heed”. I’m laughing now just thinking about it.

34. Better Off Dead – I want my two dollars!!

35. Singles – I can’t say how many times I saw this in the theater. It was a lot though. I was obsessed with the Seattle music scene at the time though and it fit right into my lifestyle at the time. the soundtrack is one of the greatest of all time. I still have it and listen to it often. Alice in Chains, Mother Love Bone, Screaming Trees, etc.

36. Steel Magnolias – If you can’t say anything nice, come sit by me. A great dramatic comedy with a little romance and a lot of tears.

37. Sleepless in Seattle – The sappiest of all love stories. It’s an original one though. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan have an enormous amount of chemistry together. I also just loved the little boy in this movie

38. The Doors – I was a Jim Morrison fan before I saw the movie, but the movie sealed the deal. Val Kilmer was perfectly cast in this role. I’ve never seen another Val Kilmer movie again without thinking of Jim Morrison. I didn’t like Meg Ryan in the Pam role at first, but after thinking about it, I guess she did a better job than anyone else.

39. Giant – Another James Dean movie. You can’t miss this one. Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor star in it, yet James Dean has the greatest role in it. The ranch hand who strikes oil and becomes richer than his boss and ends up marrying the daughter.

40. The Great Outdoors – The question is…what isn’t funny about this movie? From the water skiing scene, to the bear story, to the freaky twins, to the old 96er. Everything about this movie is funny.

Just keep swimming….

Posted by Karla on July 21, 2006

Dylan has been terrified of the water all his life. In the bath he wears a visor to keep the water out of his eyes.  In the pool he never ever dunks his head or leaves the side of the pool.

Last weekend my dad took him to a pool and taught him how to hold his breath underwater and dunk his head and now he wants to learn.  This morning we signed him up for lessons starting on Monday.  He’s very excited and I am very very pleased.  He’s almost 9 years old and almost all of his friends know how to swim and are having swimming parties.  I never wanted to push him into it, so I’m very happy he’s wanting to learn now.
